SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level Examination

Introduction to SSC CHSL

Staff selection commission conducts Combined Higher Secondary level (CHSL) Examination on yearly basis for the post of Data Entry Operator and Lower Division Clerk in various ministries and governmental organizations.

Post covered under this examinations are Data Entry Operator and Lower Division Clerk.

All the posts carry All India Service Liability (AISL) i.e. the candidate, on selection, may be asked to serve anywhere in the country.

Pay Band for the Posts

All posts lie in the same Pay Band but the Grade pay are different as given below

Data Entry Operator Pay Band-1,Grade Pay of 2400 & 1900
Lower Division Clerk Pay Band-1, Grade Pay of 1900

Eligibility Criteria for SSC CHSL

Academic Qualification :

One who has passed the qualifying examination(Higher secondary or intermediate) before applying for this examination is eligible for this. Candidates appearing in Qualifying examination are not eligible.

AgeLimit :

Candidate whose age is more than 18years and less than 27 years are eligible for this examination. However certain classes of candidates are given relaxation in upper age limit.

Pay Band for the Posts

Recruitment for the post of Lower division clerk is made on the basis of written test followed by a typing test. While recruitment for the post of Data Operator is made on the basis of written test followed by skill test. Here skill test stands for typing test along with data entry skill.

Written Test :

Duration :

  • For general candidates : 2 hours
  • For VH candidates: 2 hours & 20 minutes

Skill Test for Data Entry Operator

The 'Speed of 8000 key depressions per hour on Computer' will be adjudged on the basis of the correct entry of words key depressions as per the given passage and the duration of the said Test will be 15 (Fifteen) minutes and printed matter in English containing about 2000-2200 strokes/key-depressions would be given to each candidate who would enter the same in the Computer.

  • Only those candidates will be called for this test who qualify in written examination.
  • The “Data Entry Speed” Skill Test would be of qualifying nature
  • None of the candidates including PH candidates who qualify in the written part of the examination will be exempted from the Skill Test as passing of the skill test is a precondition and one of the essential qualifications for appointment to the post of Data Entry Operator.

Typing Test for Lower Divisional Clerk

Typing Test will be conducted for those candidates who qualify in the Written Examination

  • Such Typing Test will be conducted in English or Hindi and candidates while applying for the Examination have to make choice of language of skill test.
  • Candidates opting for English medium should have typing speed of 35 words per minute and those opting for Hindi medium should have typing speed of 30 words per minute.
  • If any candidate does not opt for any medium for typing, his option will be deemed to be for English medium.
