• Census-2011 is the 15th census of India.
• It is the 7th census of independent India.
• According to census-2011 India has 17.5% of the total population of the world.
• First census was done in the period of Lord Mayo (1872).
• In 1881, during the period of lord Ripon it became a system to do in 10 years.
• At present the population of India is 121.02 crore (census 2011).
• Population growth rate of India is 17.64%. (2001-2011).
• According to the censes-2011 maximum population growth rate has been observed in Dadra & Nagar Haveli (55%) and minimum population growth rate has been observed in Nagaland (.47%).
• According to the census-2011 sex ratio (Male: Female) in India is 1000:940.
• Maximum sex ratio has been observed in Kerala that is 1084 females per 1000 males.
• Minimum sex ratio has been observed in Haryana that is 877 females per 1000 males.
• According to the census-2011 the literacy rate of India is 74.04% against 64.84% in 2001.
• With respect to 2001 the literacy growth rate in 2011 has increased by 38.82%.
• Maximum growth rate of literacy works out to be in Kerala (93.91 %) & minimum in Bihar (63.82 %).

• Among the states the maximum population density has been observed in Bihar (1102 persons/ km2) and it’s minimum in Arunachal Pradesh (17 persons/ km2).
• Among the union territories maximum population density has been observed in Delhi(11297 persons/ km2) and its minimum in Andaman & Nicober Dwip (46 persons/ km2)
